Why You're Reading This Book:
- You're a fiction fan.
- You like a little bit of the paranormal.
- You like great characters.
From Goodreads.com: "As their story continues, Calvin and Caledonia find themselves madly in love, on the run, and nearly out of money. When Cal stumbles upon a way to cash in on Cali’s powers, their life on the road becomes a life of leisure. Despite the easy money and newfound luxury, Caledonia’s conscience begins to trouble her.
A disturbing warning only serves to confirm her misgivings, making her question her purpose in life. Finally, a shocking discovery about the true nature of her powers points the way forward, sending the two Cals on a dangerous rescue mission.
Caledonia tries her best to right the wrongs of the past, but will she only end up provoking new and even more dangerous enemies?"
My Two Cents:
"The Mackenzie Legacy" is the second book in the Athena Effect series by Derrolyn Anderson. This book picks up right where the last one left off with two of our main characters, Caledonia and Calvin, on the run from the evil doctor that wanted to do all sorts of horrible testing on Cali due to her special powers. Anderson does a good job of recapping the events of the first book, just in case you are a little bit rusty on the storyline, but the recap doesn't really feel repetitive at all. That being said, I would definitely suggest reading the first book before this one as there is a lot of story building and character building that you will not want to miss out on in the first book.
Guys, if you are afraid of reading self-published books, this would be a good series to try out or you should try Anderson's other series: Marina's Tale. One thing that has consistently drawn me into Anderson's books is the fact that she writes really interesting characters that you want to keep reading about. I really enjoyed Caledonia, Calvin, and Layla in this book. They all have really interesting back stories and there was enough twists and turns about their personalities, motives, and origins to really make you want to figure out who they are (Cali and Layla especially).
I also liked that in this book as in the first book, Anderson was really able to "normalize" the paranormal powers in the book. Sometimes I find that when I read paranormal books, I have a really hard time with the whole suspension of disbelief. Anderson finds a way to take something really extraordinary and make it fit into a world that may seem very familiar to the reader.
This is a fairly short read but it is a good one for when you want an adventurous story that is fully engaging.
