Why You're Reading This Book:

  • You're a historical fiction fan.
  • You like a little bit of the paranormal.
What's the Story?:

From Goodreads.com: "From the author of The Book of Lost Fragrances comes a haunting novel about a grieving woman who discovers the lost letters of novelist Victor Hugo, awakening a mystery that spans centuries.

In 1843, novelist Victor Hugo’s beloved nineteen-year-old daughter drowned. Ten years later, Hugo began participating in hundreds of séances to reestablish contact with her. In the process, he claimed to have communed with the likes of Plato, Galileo, Shakespeare, Dante, Jesus—and even the Devil himself. Hugo’s transcriptions of these conversations have all been published. Or so it was believed.

Recovering from her own losses, mythologist Jac L’Etoile arrives on the Isle of Jersey—where Hugo conducted the séances—hoping to uncover a secret about the island’s Celtic roots. But the man who’s invited her there, a troubled soul named Theo Gaspard, has hopes she’ll help him discover something quite different—Hugo’s lost conversations with someone called the Shadow of the Sepulcher."

My Two Cents:

"Seduction" is the third M.J. Rose book that I've read (the first was The Hypnotist and the second was The Lost Book of Fragrances). "Seduction" is the fifth book in The Reincarnationist series. One thing that has been consistently present for me throughout Rose's books is the fact that she certainly knows how to spin a really good yarn that will keep you fully engaged and entertained throughout the entire book! Although "Seduction" is the fifth book is the series, you will have absolutely no problem diving right into this book even if you have not read any of the other books in the series (personally I still need to go back and read the first couple books in the series).

I really liked that "Seduction" continues the story of Rose's heroine, Jac L'Etoile, who continues to be such a fascinating character to me. Rose gives you so much detail and insight into L'Etoile's psyche that she really begins to feel real to the reader. I think that it is easy to go overboard with a character description so it feels more like telling rather than showing but I feel like L'Etoile's character is revealed in a very natural, non-forced way.

I also liked that this story was about the famous writer, Victor Hugo. I have read The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables and really enjoyed both but I did not know much at all about Hugo's life or what it was like. Rose builds a really interesting story about him after his beloved daughter dies. I liked that Hugo's part of the story is told from the first person point of view as it really helps to pull the reader into the story. I sort of wish that Jac's story was told from first person point of view as well.

Overall, this is a great book that will appeal to those looking for a character driven historical fiction book with a punch of suspense!

  3. I'll be reading this for the tour in May, so I'm glad to see you rate this one so highly. I haven't read any Victor Hugo, but I might be prompted to do so after reading this book!

  6. This is really a pretty cover. The book sounds good but I was worried about not having read the previous books in the series. Thanks for mentioning that that will not be a problem.

Hi! Welcome to A Bookish Affair. If you leave a comment, I will try to either reply here or on your site!

As of 6/6/2011, this book is now an awards free zone. While I appreciate the awards, I would rather stick to reviewing more great books for you than trying to fill the requirements.
