What's the Story?:

Synopsis: "Sophie Duncan is a successful columnist whose world falls apart after her daughter's unexpected illness and her husband's shocking affair. When it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, her car skids off an icy road and plunges into a frozen lake. There, in the cold, dark depths of the water, Sophie experiences something profound and extraordinary--something that unlocks the secrets from her past, and teaches her what it means to truly live"

My Two Cents:

This is the first book in a new series by Julianne MacLean. This book is the story of Sophie, a very successful columnist, who's life comes falling down around her. Her beloved daughter passes away from a serious disease and almost at the same moment, she finds out that her husband is cheating on her. This sounds like a lot of action right here but that is only Sophie's back story. There is a lot more that happens in this book. The main focus of the story is the things that Sophie is able to learn after yet another huge event in her life: a car accident.

The writing style of this book is very interesting. You feel like the various characters are talking directly to you as a friend and they share everything with you so you really get an understanding of what was going on. The story is told from the point of view of a couple different characters. It was a little confusing at first because not every chapter had listed who was talking. Only the first chapter that had a new character narrating had a name associated with it. You eventually do pick up on who is narrating what chapter but it took me awhile to find my footing in this book.

This is only the first book in a planned series and I think this series is off to a great start!

  1. Interesting that the characters both talked to the reader and that the different narratives weren't labeled like we so often see. I am glad that their voices were unique enough that you eventually got comfortable with it. Wonderful review Meg

  4. It looks like Sophie has a heartbreaking time in her life but I do like stories where the characters come back after hard times.
