Why You're Reading This Book:

  • You're a historical fiction fan.
What's the Story?:

From Goodreads.com: "Confessions of Marie Antoinette, the riveting and sweeping final novel in Juliet Grey’s trilogy on the life of the legendary French queen, blends rich historical detail with searing drama, bringing to life the early years of the French Revolution and the doomed royal family’s final days.

Versailles, 1789. As the burgeoning rebellion reaches the palace gates, Marie Antoinette finds her privileged and peaceful life swiftly upended by violence. Once her loyal subjects, the people of France now seek to overthrow the crown, placing the heirs of the Bourbon dynasty in mortal peril.

Displaced to the Tuileries Palace in Paris, the royal family is propelled into the heart of the Revolution. There, despite a few staunch allies, they are surrounded by cunning spies and vicious enemies. Yet despite the political and personal threats against her, Marie Antoinette remains above all a devoted wife and mother, standing steadfastly by her husband, Louis XVI, and protecting their young son and daughter. And though the queen and her family try to flee, and she secretly attempts to arrange their rescue from the clutches of the Revolution, they cannot outrun the dangers encircling them, or escape their shocking fate."

My Two Cents:

"Confessions of Marie Antoinette is the third and final book in Juliet Grey's fabulous trilogy that centers on the infamous Marie Antoinette. This is a fantastic conclusion to a trilogy that I have really enjoyed. Although it's not necessary to read the first two books to enjoy this one, I suggest that you read the other two books first, which will give you a great appreciation for just how amazingly Grey brings Marie Antoinette to life.

This book takes place as the French Revolution is slowly spreading fervor over the entire country. As the story goes on, Marie Antoinette becomes more and more desperate to preserve the lives of her family as well of those of her family. The story is told from the perspective for Marie Antoinette herself and a commoner, which allowed readers to see more of what was going on. The author captures just how desperate the Royal Family must have been at the time. You can feel their fear.

Marie Antoinette is one of those figures of history that just doesn't have a great reputation but Grey does a really fantastic job of humanizing her and allowing us a little bit of insight into where she was coming from. One of the things that I love about historical fiction is that it can allow its readers to see things in a different light, which definitely happened for me with all three of these books.

Overall, this is a stunning conclusion.
