Odds and Ends: To Style or Not to Style?

When it comes to most things in life, I am very much a function over form type of girl. If I buy something, I like it to be something that I will actually use. But when I can find that sweet spot where form meets function, it's really magical!

I organized my books by color. This is where form meets function for me. I'm a visual person so the colors really help me find the books I'm looking for quicker.

Gilt.com has a really drool worthy sale going on today called "Style a Bookcase." While I'm sort of in love with so many things in the sale, I don't have extra room on my bookcases to display pretty things like:

From Gilt.com
or

Gilt.com
or
Gilt.com
Sadly, my bookshelves are too full for me to be able to justify buying pretty bookends. Books on full shelves stand up on their own, ya'll (unfortunately)!

To top it all off, Gilt is also are having a sale on the whole collection of Penguin Clothbound books (a collection that I just started at Christmas).

Gilt.com. Want.

I want it all, guys!

What say you? Form? Function? Both?

*All the thoughts above are my own and I am not being compensated by Gilt. This sale is just cool, guys!

  1. Aww, I've been wanting to organise my books by colour for aaaages now. I'm so jealous! I just don't think I could take it... they're in alphabetical order by author's last name, then series order, at the minute. I have OCD (genuinely, not some 'Bahaha, I'm so OCD!' thing) and I don't think I could cope with my series being broken up if they're all different colours.

It does look so pretty though... But then my TBR shelf is right underneath my normal bookcase and that's in chronological order of purchase and it would look strange... ARGH.

Sorry. Point is, your books are pretty :D

    1. Breaking up series of books is one thing that I was not able to do when I arranged the books by color. I actually have another shelf (a cool barrister bookcase) that I put all of my series and special books (ones with autographs and what not) on. I could not bear to break up the serialized books!

  2. I agree, by color is so pretty! I just want them to be by author, the within that by genre, so I just can't do by color, haha.

I am drooling over the Penguin cloth-bound classics. They are so beautiful.

    1. I really thought having the books by color was going to bother me more than it does. I remember colors pretty well so I've always been able to find the book that I was looking for! We shall see if this lasts!

I'm madly in love with the Penguin cloth bound books. They are so pretty and they are very nice editions too!

  3. I organised by colour when my books where on shelves I put up on the wall. Then I bought proper brown old bookshelves and it looked weird sorting by colour, so I went back to alphabetical order and I love it.

And no, don't show me the pretty clothbound Penguin covers that I cannot justify buying. I want. Now.

    1. I pretty much have a room with wall to wall bookcases (speaking of which, I need to put pictures up of my library) and it does not help!!!

    1. The entire collection was over $400 on Gilt but individual books are not too bad (between $12 and $15). I guess I will just collect them slowly...

Hi! Welcome to A Bookish Affair. If you leave a comment, I will try to either reply here or on your site!

As of 6/6/2011, this book is now an awards free zone. While I appreciate the awards, I would rather stick to reviewing more great books for you than trying to fill the requirements.
