Why You're Reading This Book:

  • You're a foodie.
 What's the Story?:

From Goodreads.com: "The Pioneer Woman--accidental ranch wife and #1 "New York Times"-bestselling author Drummond--shares even more of her satisfying and delicious country cooking, with recipes sure to please the whole family, from meat-loving cowboys to finicky young ranch hands. And with widely available ingredients and step-by-step photos of each recipe, she makes it easy to cook new favorites."

My Two Cents:

So it's a little hard to rate a cookbook but let me try. Okay, first things first, I love the Pioneer Woman. I've been following her website for a long time and I loved her other cookbooks. Anyhow, I was really excited for this book. I was most definitely not disappointed.

Here are a couple key things I liked about this cookbook:
- Basic ingredients (there's not really anything you're going to have trouble finding)
- Clear pictures (step by step directions are key)
- Yummy food (I wanted to make everything is this darn book)
- Easy cooking directions (I love to cook but I'm not so good with the more complicated acts of yummy making; PW's directions are really simple to follow and are things that new and seasoned cooks can follow easily)

I think this book will be a fantastic cookbook for those who already love the Pioneer Woman and those who have yet to discover her. I plan to get my own copy for my own collection!

  1. Here's why I didn't like this book. It's full of retro, Betty Crocker era recipes that are high in fat and cholesterol. Plus, many of the recipes can be found in church and community cookbooks from Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

The book is filled with photos of cats, dogs, cattle and ranch scenes. Excuse me, but I don't need that in a cookbook. Ask yourself, who needs recipes for burgers, sloppy joes and brownies. And who the hell makes apple dumplings with Mountain Dew?

For any serious foodie this book would be an insult. Ree Drummond is not a cook, she's lifted most of these recipes from other sources and added a pinch of salt here, some pepper there and called the recipe her own. Given her current plagiarism scandal and the fact she won't even apologize to the offended party, I won't be buying this or any future cookbooks. This Pioneer Woman nonsense has gotten out of hand.

I'll stick with The Marlboro Woman website. At least she/he actually keeps it real.

    1. Wow!!! I had not heard anything about the plagiarism scandal (I don't watch her show, You Tube or otherwise so I guess I just wasn't in the know). That's definitely serious :/

Hi! Welcome to A Bookish Affair. If you leave a comment, I will try to either reply here or on your site!

As of 6/6/2011, this book is now an awards free zone. While I appreciate the awards, I would rather stick to reviewing more great books for you than trying to fill the requirements.
